Looking to get away to a tropical destination this fall? You will want to pick a location that is not as likely to be the target of a tropical weather event. What are the best destinations during this time of the year when looking for some fun in the sun? Read on for our suggestions.

California and Hawaii

While Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the Carolinas are frequent targets of tropical storms and hurricanes during the fall, California and Hawaii are generally safe bets for travel in the U.S. There has only been one time in recorded history that a hurricane made a direct landfall in California. You have to go back to 1858 to find that event. In recent history, Tropical Storm Hilary came ashore in California in 2023. But these occurrences are a rarity.

Hurricanes are also rare in Hawaii. The island chain only covers about 6,400 miles across the massive Pacific, meaning that a storm has to head in a very specific direction to make contact. Most hurricanes that have come toward Hawaii from the Eastern Pacific have weakened into tropical storms or depressions before reaching the islands. The higher amounts of wind shear that circulate around the islands tend to put a lid on further development.

Costa Rica, Panama, and Uruguay
