3 hours agoCommunities along Alaska’s western coast are facing heartbreaking loss and massive destruction after the remnants of Typhoon Halong brought record-breaking winds and catastrophic floods to the region over the weekend. One woman has died, and two people remain missing as emergency crews race against time to respond to the crisis.
Communities Cut Off by Storm Surges and 100 mph Winds
According to the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, wind speeds reached up to 100 miles per hour, toppling structures and pushing powerful storm surges into low-lying villages. Coastal communities, including Kipnuk, Kwigillingok, Bethel, Kotzebue, and Nome, were among the hardest hit regions.
Alaska State Troopers confirmed that the woman who died was found in Kwigillingok, which is also where two people remain unaccounted for. The storm struck some of the most remote communities in the United States, where many residents rely on boats and snowmobiles for transportation and have limited road access. Floodwaters damaged homes and critical infrastructure, forcing dozens to evacuate.
