16-Year-Old Snowmobiler Dies in Avalanche

A snowmobiler-triggered avalanche in Warmup Bowl buried a 16-year-old rider under 10 feet of snow. Despite rescue efforts, he did not survive. The Avalanche Center had issued warnings about unstable conditions in the area.

The Alaska Mountain Rescue Group recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy in Turnagain Pass, Alaska, on March 22, 2025. Tucker Challan of Soldotna, AK, was the fourth person this month to fall victim to Avalanches in the mountainous state.

Tucker was with a group of snowmobilers riding on the backside of Seattle Ridge on the northwest side of the Seward Highway— an area called Warmup Bowl, designated for motorized access. The popular recreation area is located about 60 miles southeast of Anchorage.

At 2:34 pm Saturday, Alaskan State Troopers received an online report stating, "a juvenile male triggered an avalanche and died after being buried."
