2025 Hurricane Names Are Set – From Andrea to Wendy

15 hours agoHurricane season kicked off June 1, and weather folks already have their lineup of 21 names ready for whatever storms decide to crash the party this year. Some names sitting on the bench include Karen, Dexter, and Lorenzo.
Naming tropical storms and hurricanes has been a thing since the 1950s. Each hurricane region gets its own batch of names, with the Atlantic covering storms that brew up over the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea.
The yearly list contains 21 names in alphabetical order, but they ditch letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z because coming up with decent names starting with those letters is a real pain. Most names get reused every six years, so nearly every storm this season will have the same name as a tropical storm or hurricane from 2019.
One Big Change This Year
The only switch from six years ago is Dexter taking over for Dorian on the list. Dorian got the boot after wreaking havoc in 2019, especially in the Bahamas where it became one of the worst hurricanes ever recorded.
