3 Arrested in Japan for Hermit Crab Trafficking

2 weeks agoAmami Ōshima - On this subtropical island in Japan, three Chinese nationals were arrested for smuggling 160 kilograms or 353 pounds of protected native hermit crabs stuffed into suitcases. The incident sheds light on the illicit trade of protected species, particularly in Asia.
The Smuggling Incident
According to police reports and media coverage, the three suspects were staying in a local hotel when staff heard strange rustling noises coming from their luggage. It turned out to be 160 kilograms of hermit crabs.
On the island of Amami Ōshima, its rare native species are designated as national Natural Monuments, which grants them legal protection under Japanese cultural and environmental preservation laws.
