3 Dead in Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak on Atlantic Cruise Ship

Three people have died and three others are receiving medical treatment after a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship traveling through the Atlantic Ocean. Health officials from multiple countries are now investigating the incident, which has drawn urgent attention from international health organizations.

What Happened Aboard the MV Hondius

The vessel at the center of the outbreak is the MV Hondius, operated by Netherlands-based Oceanwide Expeditions. The ship departed Ushuaia, Argentina, approximately three weeks ago carrying an estimated 150 passengers. Its route included stops at Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Nightingale Island, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, Ascension Island, and most recently Cape Verde, an island nation off the west coast of Africa.

The World Health Organization confirmed Sunday that six people aboard had been affected by hantavirus, with one case confirmed through laboratory testing and five others suspected. As of the latest reports, the ship remains anchored off Cape Verde, and local authorities have not yet authorized any remaining symptomatic individuals to disembark.
