While most everyone understands the importance of seeking shelter during tornado warnings, there are also a number of other tips you should know in order to stay safe when severe weather is brewing. From severe thunderstorm warnings to flooded roads, here is a look at some of the lesser-known safety rules to keep in mind.

1. You May Not Hear Tornado Sirens Indoors

Tornado sirens are not designed to be heard indoors. They are installed to warn people outside to seek shelter immediately, which means you cannot count on hearing a siren if you are inside.

In addition, millions of people live too far from the nearest siren to hear its alarm at all. Being intentional about having multiple ways to receive weather alerts will ensure you do not miss a warning. A smartphone is a great tool for this, as most modern devices allow wireless emergency alerts to be transmitted directly through agencies such as the National Weather Service. Keep your phone fully charged during periods of severe weather, particularly overnight when you are unlikely to be aware of what is happening outside.

2. Take Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Seriously
