What started as a family kayaking trip along the coast of Wales turned into international news when a young hero saved his grandfather from drowning. Thanks to the calm thinking of an 8-year-old boy and the rapid response of rescue crews, both a grandfather and grandson returned safely to shore after their kayak capsized and drifted more than two miles into one of Britain's most challenging stretches of water.

The incident has drawn attention across the United Kingdom and around the world, not only because of the dramatic rescue, but also because of the remarkable composure displayed by a child facing circumstances that would have overwhelmed many adults.

A Family Outing Takes a Dangerous Turn

Young Marley Jones and his grandfather, David “Dai” Jones, were enjoying a family vacation in Fontygary, a small coastal community just west of Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, when they decided to put their kayak into the water. As they rowed along the coast, their kayak overturned.

David was able to help Marley get to shore, but found himself clinging to the side of their kayak as the swift current pulled him further from shore. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) said that the Bristol Channel, where the pair were kayaking, is known for rapid tides and quickly-changing conditions. What may seem like a manageable distance from land can become extremely dangerous in a short period of time, particularly for someone stranded in the water.

Marley Knew They Needed Help

Despite being only eight years old, Marley knew that the pair needed help, and that they needed help quickly. Fortunately, the family had taken an important safety precaution before heading onto the water. They carried a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch.

Marley recalled his conversation with his grandmother, who he reached by phone. Marley said, "When I called my Nan, I told her I was okay, but Granscha looked like he was drowning and we needed help."

Marley's grandmother contacted emergency services, and HM Coastguard requested assistance from the RNLI rescue team. These crews launched a lifeboat and headed toward the area where the pair had been reported.
