If you've been on social media or watched the news this past week, you've probably seen at least one video of a wall of water triggering flooding somewhere in the country.

Lots of people have been asking: what the heck is going on?

Here's a rundown of the recent flood events that started on July Fourth in Texas, plus some perspective on why this time of year gets hit so hard by heavy rain.

Major Flash Flood Events This Week

Central Texas, July 4: With more than 115 killed, this event ranks as the deadliest rainfall-driven flash flood in the U.S. since 1976. A 26-foot wall of water swept through the Guadalupe River in Kerr County, including Camp Mystic, where at least 27 children and camp counselors lost their lives. Up to 20 inches of rain dumped on the Texas Hill Country.
