Humans have always used stories to understand the world. Ancient peoples relied on harvests for survival, so the transformation from harsh winter to lush spring was fascinating. When temperature makes the difference between life and death, people needed to know which gods to appease to bring back their crops.

Demeter and Her Kidnapped Daughter

In Greek mythology, Demeter makes plants grow and flowers bloom. Her daughter Persephone got kidnapped by Hades, god of death. He dragged her down to the underworld.

Greek myth blamed the seasons on Persephone’s time in the underworld—when she returns, Demeter allows the earth to bloom again. (Adobe Stock)

Demeter searched everywhere. She finally learned the truth: Hades had taken her. Demeter couldn't rescue Persephone, but she could go on strike.
