It has been a disastrous month for the Philippines, with more trouble already unfolding. Just days after a deadly flooding event engulfed a large portion of the islands, another typhoon has made landfall. Typhoon Uwan, also known internationally as Fung-Wong, has struck northern Luzon, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall to a region still reeling from Typhoon Tino last week. Here is the latest on the storm’s impact and where it is headed next.

The Philippines Hit by Second Typhoon in One Week

Local officials in the Philippines are warning residents that recovery efforts will be difficult as a second powerful typhoon has swept across the country. The island nation suffered a direct strike from Typhoon Tino last Tuesday, unleashing widespread flooding across several provinces. At least 188 fatalities have been blamed on Tino and its flooding rainfall, with much of the destruction centered in Cebu and neighboring regions.

Now, Typhoon Uwan has made landfall over Aurora Province on the eastern coast of Luzon. The storm arrived late Sunday night, packing sustained winds of around 115 miles per hour and gusts exceeding 140 miles per hour, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The powerful system dumped more than 200 millimeters of rain across parts of Luzon, triggering flash floods, landslides, and extensive power outages.
