The northeastern U.S. has been put on alert that the coldest weekend of the season is setting up across the region. In addition to the frigid temperatures, this corner of the country should brace for the threat of snow and a rapid freeze-up. Read on for all of the details of this wintry forecast.

Frigid Air and Snow in the Forecast Starting Friday in the Northeast

The first full weekend of February is expected to be a doozy across much of the northeastern quarter of the country. A surge of Arctic air diving down from eastern Canada will set the stage for wintry precipitation and gusty winds to whip up. Over 100 million Americans will be under the gun for what is expected to be the coldest weekend of the season thus far.

The Arctic air will not gather much warmth as it moves to the south over the frozen landscape of the northern U.S. Widespread snow and ice coverage on waterways will prevent the cold air from warming up as it crosses the border.

Not only will it be a miserable weekend to be outside, but the chance of slippery roads and runways will also complicate travel in a zone from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast. The worst of the weather is expected to arrive over the first half of the weekend.

The line of snow will track from the Great Lakes and into the Appalachians beginning on Friday. The west-facing slopes of the Appalachians and portions of the Great Lakes should expect 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow at this time. The first flakes will start to fly when tempeatures are still hovering around the freezing mark. The onset of the colder temperatures will turn the slushy snow to ice in some places.
