Another week of unsettled weather will be the story for the central and eastern U.S, despite the warmer temperatures on the horizon. While the northern tier of the region will see a fresh influx of snow and ice, a looming weather event at the end of the week will bring more widespread rain and snow accumulations. Here is a look at what you should expect in the days ahead.

Narrow Strip of Snow and Ice to Precede Late-Week Storm

Warmer air is filtering up from the Pacific and into the eastern two-thirds of the country as the jet stream finally retreats to the north for a time. While the warmer air will be a welcome addition to the January landscape, enough cold air will persist in the northern edges of the region to keep snow and ice in the picture through the middle of the week.

NOAA Weather Prediction Center map shows the expected precipitation setup from Tuesday into early Wednesday, including a band of snow and freezing rain potential stretching from the Upper Midwest into parts of the Great Lakes and interior Northeast.

A narrow strip in the Upper Midwest and the interior Northeast will see a new wave of snow and ice. Most of the wintry precipitation is expected to remain north of Interstate 80. The higher terrains of Pennsylvania along this interstate could see a bit of sleet mixed in with rain showers. Areas to the south of Interstate 80 will remain mostly dry until the end of the week when the next system moves through.
