At Least 50 Dead in Nepal as Rains Trigger Catastrophic Landslides
Alexis Thornton
5 days agoTorrential rain began hammering Nepal on October 3, 2025, setting off a chain of disasters that would devastate mountain communities. By October 5, the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority confirmed at least 50 people had died in floods, landslides, lightning strikes, and storm-related incidents. Rescue operations are still underway, and officials warn the death toll may rise in the coming days.
When Nature Turns into a Nightmare
The rain hit hardest in the eastern Ilam district, where massive landslides buried homes while families were sleeping. Entire clusters of houses were wiped out in minutes. One official described reaching the hardest hit areas as “nearly impossible” because landslides had blocked roads and rain continued to fall.
Entire Communities Disappeared
Heavy rain began on Friday, October 3, and by the following night, entire villages were overwhelmed by landslides. In one tragic case, six members of a single family died after their home was completely destroyed.
