A storm developing across the southern U.S. this weekend could track to the north, bringing the potential of snow and ice to the Ohio Valley and the Northeast. The biggest uncertainty now is where the storm will track. Here is a closer look at some of the potential scenarios as this weather maker plays out in the days ahead.

Possibility of Weekend Winter Event for the Northeast and Beyond

Meteorologists are closely watching the development of a southern storm that is expected to hit right in time for the weekend. This is the same system that is currently delivering rain and snow to California. The weather maker will eventually shift to the east as the week progresses, taking aim at the southern tier of the country.

What forecasters are sure about is that the storm will unleash heavy rain and the threat of thunderstorms to a wide swath of the south-central U.S., the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast. The question mark lies in how far north the system will extend. The strength and direction of the winds will dictate how far north the storm will track as it pushes into the Mississippi Valley and beyond.
