Deadly Storm Hammers California on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
A potent storm snarled travel and wreaked havoc on holiday plans all over California this week. Southern California was on the receiving end of heavy rainfall on Christmas Eve, triggering flash flood warnings in the populated Los Angeles area. A state of emergency was declared across Shasta, San Diego, Riverside, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Los Angeles counties, impacting millions of Californians.
The storm was blamed for one death in San Diego. Strong winds sent a tree branch flying, killing a person on Christmas Eve.
The severe weather also produced several mudslides and debris flows throughout the state. The mountain town of Wrightwood experienced a debris flow on Christmas Day that buried vehicles and caused damage to buildings. Wrightwood is located in the hills about 40 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
