Cold Front to Deliver Chilly and Wet Weather Heading into the Weekend for the Northeast

1 hour agoMother Nature is going to take the Northeast for a wild ride in the days ahead. A mix of an incoming cold front and a new storm will result in fluctuating temperatures and unsettled conditions through the first part of the weekend for this part of the nation. Read on for more details about what is to come for the last weekend of April.
Cool and Wet Forecast Back on Deck for Much of the Northeast
A southward dip in the jet stream will pave the way for cooler air to plunge into the Northeast. This movement will happen as moisture-rich air from the Atlantic expands farther inland. The timing of the cooler waves of air will be highly inconsistent, with noticeable swings from day to day across the region. The moisture will also not be uniformly spread out, impacting some areas more than others.
A front moving to the southwest from the northern reaches of New England on Friday will trigger a change in the weather as it hits the eastern Great Lakes, the central portions of the Appalachians, and the mid-Atlantic coast. The cooler flank of the front across New England and upstate New York will see temperatures hover in the 40s and 50s. This translates to roughly 10 to 20 degrees below the historical average for this time of the year.
Temperatures will also rapidly drop from the northeast to the southwest, starting in Pennsylvania and moving into New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Residents will be reaching for jackets as the cold front clips the region.
You can also expect some pockets of rain to fire up near the frontal boundary. This drizzle will combine with a cold wind coming from the ocean to create miserable conditions along the upper mid-Atlantic and New England coastlines.
Heading into late Friday and Saturday, the chilly temperatures and damp conditions are forecast to remain entrenched across the bulk of the Northeast. A different storm system coming in from the west will support the development of more substantial rain at this time.
For instance, attendees at the last day of the NFL draft in Pittsburgh may be dodging rain showers on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Likewise, the annual Penn State Blue-White spring game in University Park, Pennsylvania, may also end up being a wet affair. Fans should dress in layers and pack along rain gear.
It is going to be a soggy day in the heart of the Northeast. New York City is bracing for about a half-inch of rain during the day Saturday, with another half-inch expected after the sun goes down. The forecast is calling for a high of just 52 degrees and overnight readings that slide into the low 40s.
