The Midwest and the Northeast should prepare for a potentially damaging frost or freeze event in the coming days.

A rush of cold air will necessitate that some residents take action to protect sensitive plants and trees in this part of the country.

Here is what you need to know about the upcoming cold weather.

Chances of Frost or Freeze in the Forecast

While the warmer than usual winter and early spring may have felt pleasant, this unseasonable warmth has laid the groundwork for a higher chance of destructive frosts and freezes.

The mercury has trended about 6 to 8 degrees over the historical average since December 1 in the Midwest.

Meanwhile, temperatures have been running about 3 to 6 degrees warmer than normal for the Northeast.

The warmth created a number of negative impacts for the region. For instance, historically low ice coverage levels across the Great Lakes disrupted winter sports activities and hurt profit margins for businesses that rely on the winter weather.
