Cold Temperatures, Frost, and Wet Snow Possible This Weekend in New England
Christy Bowen
YesterdayThe summerlike warmth that distinguished the middle part of the week in the Northeast is about to be replaced by another round of chilly conditions. Some of the highest terrains of New England may even see some wet snow in the coming days. Here is a look at the latest turn in the topsy-turvy weather for this corner of the country.
Two More Rounds of Chilly Weather on the Horizon for the Northeast
An influx of noticeably cooler air is coming down from Canada and into the northeastern U.S. by the end of the work week. The sharp downturn in the temperatures will feel even more dramatic on the heels of widespread temperatures in the 80s on Wednesday.
The change in the weather will also feature another round of rain showers, gusty thunderstorms, and the chance of wet snow for the highest elevations. Thursday is shaping up to be mostly dry across the region. This will be a welcome respite after Wednesday's storms.
The first of two waves of chilly Canadian air will surge into the Northeast on Thursday. This development will push the rain over the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic farther to the south. Cooler and less humid air will then become the dominant weather element in this part of the U.S.
The exception to the dry conditions will be across some portions of New England. Portland, Maine, is forecast to see rain showers in the morning evolve into scattered afternoon thunderstorms. The forecast is also calling for highs in the mid 60s, winds out of the north at 10 to 15 mph, and overnight lows that settle in the upper 40s.
Afternoon highs in the 80s will slide into the 60s and 70s on Thursday and Friday for most of the Interstate 95 corridor and beyond. For instance, New York City will top out in the mid 70s on Thursday before barely reaching the 80-degree mark on Friday ahead of the next cooldown.
An even colder batch of cool air will dive into the Northeast over the weekend. Unlike its late-week predecessor, the weekend chill will also come with spotty rain showers and thunderstorms. The strongest storm cells could carry enough energy to generate gusty winds and small hail. While this is not expected to be a widespread severe weather event, those with outdoor plans will want to be mindful of the unsettled conditions coming along with the weekend cooldown.
