Life-Threatening Cold Temperatures on the Way for the Central and Eastern U.S.
A fresh infusion of Arctic air is diving down from northern Canada and making its way into the central and eastern U.S. The cold air is expected to settle into these regions by the end of the work week. Forecasters are warning that this weather pattern could deliver temperatures that are even chillier than the recent December cold snap. The wave of Arctic air will also creep as far south as Texas at times. About 70% of the nation will experience temperatures that fall below freezing at some time this week.
It has already been a frigid winter for many areas of the central U.S. Some of the coldest readings thus far include 11 degrees below zero in Minneapolis, 2 degrees below zero in Chicago, 6 degrees in Pittsburgh, 12 degrees in Nashville, and 23 degrees in Dallas. Several of these locations are likely to see even colder weather just in time for the weekend.
