The week is going to get off to a fiery start across much of the central U.S. before the storms track to the east by the middle of the week. Forecasters are now warning that a widespread severe weather outbreak could develop on Monday, putting millions of Americans at risk. Read on for a closer look at the expected timing and impacts associated with the volatile weather pattern.

Central U.S. Faces High Risk of Tornadoes and Severe Storms Monday

Multiple rounds of potentially dangerous severe weather are in store for the central U.S. on Monday. The line of storms will shift farther to the east on Tuesday. The strongest storm cells could produce strong, long-track tornadoes and straight-line winds. These winds could exceed hurricane force speeds, defined as 74 mph or greater. Wind speeds this powerful are capable of bringing down trees and power lines while also triggering damage to homes and businesses.

Heavy rain is also likely at times. Communities that pick up too much rain too quickly will be under the threat of flash flooding. In addition to the threat of torrential rain, high winds, and tornadoes, this storm system could also unleash large hail across the Plains, the Mississippi Valley, and the Upper Midwest.

Hail as large as a baseball is a possibility. This is large enough to cause widespread damage to roofs, siding, vehicles, and windows. Pets and livestock will also be at risk.
