The end of the year is a good time to reflect on the weather events that stole all of the headlines in 2023.

Here is a look back at the most memorable weather events that happened over the past year, ranging from powerful tornadoes to the deadliest wildfire in the country over the last century.

Record-breaking January Tornadoes

January is not typically a month that is associated with tornadic activity, making January of 2023 quite the anomaly.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC), the month clocked in with 168 confirmed tornadoes, spread out over two outbreaks. This number was more than triple the norm for the month, setting a new record in the process.

The first outbreak happened on January 12, spawning 70 twisters in seven different states. Three of these tornadoes were classified as EF3 events, killing at least 9 people and injuring 34 in Alabama and Georgia.
