The second major heat wave of the year is building across the Desert Southwest. Daily highs will climb 20 to 30 degrees above this week's readings, pushing into the triple digits and challenging some daily records. Phoenix is forecast to peak near 110 degrees on Monday. Here is what to expect, where it will be hottest, and how to stay safe.

A Dangerous Heat Wave Builds Across the Desert Southwest

Daily highs will skyrocket across the Desert Southwest beginning Friday. Temperatures will jump 20 to 30 degrees above what was recorded earlier in the week, reaching levels not seen since last August. The pace of the warm-up could catch some residents off guard.

Climate Central temperature forecast for May 8 to 11, 2026, based on NOAA GFS, showing average highs near 110 degrees across Arizona, the California desert, and southern Nevada, with cooler 70s along the California coast.

Major metro areas including Las Vegas and Fresno are forecast to see their first triple-digit readings of the season. The heat will not be quite as far above normal as the March heat wave, but it will still be dangerous and warrants precautions.
