September is upon us. Will the cooler weather that characterized the end of August for much of the country linger into the new month or will summer have a last gasp? Read on for the details of the long-range September outlook.

Where the Heat Will Linger This September

As the first month of the meteorological fall, it is not unusual to enjoy cooler temperatures as September kicks off. A new outlook issued as a joint effort between Atmospheric G2 and The Weather Company is shedding a little light on what to expect in the weeks ahead.

The long-range forecast is calling for the summer heat to persist in the western U.S. while the southeastern corner of the country enjoys a respite from the hot weather. Meanwhile, the East Coast will see temperatures fall slightly below average as a whole during the month of September. The unseasonably cool weather will extend from Pennsylvania and down into Texas.

High temperatures typically hover in the 80s across the southern U.S. from Texas to North Carolina during the month of September. This means that highs could dip into the 70s at times in this region.

Conversely, it will sizzle in the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest. The long-range forecast is calling for temperatures to climb above the typical averages across much of the western third of the country. The greatest departure from normal temperatures will be in the Northern Rockies.

Temperatures across the western U.S. vary greatly in September, dependent largely on the geography of any specific area. For instance, temperatures in the higher elevations range in the 50s and 60s, while the Desert Southwest still regularly sees readings hit the century mark.

The northern third of the country typically sees highs in the 60s and the 70s during the ninth month of the year. Forecasters are predicting that most of this region should land at about average in the coming weeks.
