A lot has been said about the impacts of the emerging La Niña on the nation's winter weather outlook. A new report released last week from The Weather Company and Atmospheric G2 is going deeper on this outlook with a more detailed forecast for the meteorological winter, defined as December, January, and February. Discover what this report is signaling about the weather ahead across the U.S.

Overall Outlook for the Meteorological Winter

A weak La Niña will continue to drive the weather patterns through the winter season. However, meteorologists are cautioning that it is not the only element at play. It is how the various drivers will interact with each other that will influence how the season unfolds across the country.

The latest NOAA seasonal outlook highlights a classic La Niña pattern, with colder-than-normal temperatures favored across the Pacific Northwest, northern Rockies, and northern Plains, while warmer conditions dominate the South, Desert Southwest, Florida,

In general, forecasters are calling for the coldest temperatures to settle over the Pacific Northwest, the northern Rockies, and the northern Plains in a zone from Washington state to the east into North Dakota. Temperatures will also lean cooler than the norm in a swath of land from Northern California to the Upper Midwest.
