New record highs could be set this week as heat expands from the central U.S. to the East Coast. Here is a closer look at the toasty forecast in store for the second full week of June.

Record Heat Builds Across the Plains and Midwest to Start the Week

A Climate Central temperature map based on NOAA GFS forecast data showing average high temperatures across the contiguous United States from June 8–10, 2026, with deep red and dark orange colors indicating 90- to 110-degree readings concentrated across the central and southern Plains, Southwest, and into the Midwest.

Dozens of record highs could fall this week as heat builds across several states. Widespread temperatures in the 90s will be the story for much of the week as the heat builds from the nation's heartland and to the east. Forecasters are warning that real feel readings could soar into the triple digits as the humidity levels also increase along with the air temperatures.

The heat will first be a factor across the South and the Plains states. Monday and Tuesday will feature temperatures in the 80s and 90s for millions of Americans in these regions. Locations as far north as the Dakotas are bracing for temperatures in the 90s by Tuesday.

For instance, Rapid City, South Dakota, will climb from the upper 70s on Monday to the 90-degree benchmark on Tuesday. It will also be quite windy, with winds whipping around from the south-southwest at 15 to 25 mph. The unseasonable warmth will be short-lived in this popular summer tourist destination. The Wednesday forecast is calling for the mercury to top out in the low 70s, a reading more typical of this early in the summer.

A large swath of western Texas will sizzle on Monday as temperatures surpass the century mark. Even areas that do not cross the 100-degree threshold will feel like it when the humidity is taken into account.

More record-setting weather is on tap for Tuesday across the Plains states. The more temperate Mountain West will also see the heat. For instance, Denver is forecast to see temperatures in the mid 90s on Tuesday. Like the Dakotas, it will also be quite breezy with winds from the southwest at 15 to 25 mph. The Mile High City will remain warm on Wednesday with highs in the low 90s under mostly sunny skies.

It will also be a sizzler of a day across the central Plains on Tuesday. Dodge City, Kansas, is expecting highs to reach the upper 90s on Tuesday. In addition to the heat, the city will be dealing with the threat of isolated thunderstorms and winds gusting to speeds of over 40 mph at times.
