The mild start to May is going to be in the rearview mirror soon, according to a new long-range outlook. The cooler-than-usual temperatures are set to be replaced by a dramatic warmup across most of the U.S. Here is a look at the major temperature reversal looming on the horizon.

Warmer Temperatures Headed Across the U.S. This Week

Summer heat is on the way for a large swath of the country, erasing the cool start to the month of May. An updated 8 to 15-day outlook from the National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting that a prominent ridge of high pressure coming in from the west will translate to widespread unseasonable warmth for the bulk of the nation. The greatest departure from normal readings will be across the Plains states.

The only areas of the country that will remain under the umbrella of normal temperatures will be the extreme Pacific Northwest, New England, and the coastal portions of the Northeast and the mid-Atlantic. However, even these areas will not see the unseasonably chilly weather that has marked most of the month in the eastern U.S.
