Dust Storm Slams Phoenix, Knocks Out Power and Halts Travel
Elena Martinez
3 days agoA massive dust storm—known locally as a haboob—raced through the Phoenix area Monday afternoon, plunging the city into a surreal state of near-darkness and causing widespread disruption. The storm cut power to over 15,000 people across Maricopa County and grounded flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport after strong winds and rain battered the region.
This thunderstorm-driven haboob originated from collapsing storm cells in the Santa Catalina Mountains. As the downdraft hit the ground, it kicked up a massive wall of dust—enveloping the city in minutes during the rush-hour commute. Wind gusts as high as 70 mph were reported at Sky Harbor, disrupting flights and crippling airport operations.
Disruptions and Damage
Power Outages: More than 15,000 residents were left without electricity—though that number dropped to around 500 by Tuesday morning.
Airport Chaos: The airport suffered roof damage, and flights were delayed as cleanup efforts began.
Home Invasions: Fine dust infiltrated homes through even the smallest cracks, coating interiors and rattling windows.
Motorist Warning: With visibility reduced to nearly zero, drivers were urged to pull over and avoid travel where possible.
