'Tis the season to take a trip to the pumpkin patch and pick out that perfect round gourd for your fall decor. The big question is, how early is too early to display that pumpkin on the porch? While it is never too soon to start decorating for the fall season, putting out a pumpkin too early could be a waste if it does not last until Halloween. Here is a closer look at the best time to put out your fall pumpkins, as well as how you can extend their lifespan.

How Long Will a Pumpkin Last?

Temperatures are falling sharply across the U.S., inspiring many Americans to decorate their porch for the Halloween holiday. The thing to remember when shopping for your pumpkin is that carved pumpkins will not last as long as uncarved gourds. Pumpkin farmers recommend purchasing a pumpkin within one week of when you plan to carve it. You will get more life out of a pumpkin if you do not plan on cutting it open.

The weather is a big influencer in how long the pumpkin will remain fresh. Now that the temperatures are finally cooling off, you can expect a whole pumpkin to last through Halloween. Whole pumpkins typically last about two to three months when displayed in areas with cooler weather. Your pumpkin will start to rot sooner if you live in the southern tier of the country, where temperatures are still toasty in some places.
