Over a dozen people have been killed and hundreds more injured after a massive earthquake struck Afghanistan early Monday. Here is the latest on this developing situation in one of the world's most vulnerable regions.

Death Toll Rising After 6.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Afghanistan

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake rattled Afghanistan in the early morning hours on Monday, striking near Mazar-i-Sharif. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at a shallow depth of just 17.4 miles. Unfortunately, the event impacted one of the most populated areas in the northern part of the country.

The Afghanistan Disaster Management Authority said late Monday that at least 622 people have been injured, in addition to the 20 confirmed fatalities. The agency warns that the casualty number could increase as search and rescue operations continue. The USGS models signal that there could be hundreds of fatalities as a result of this particular quake.
