First Tropical Storm of 2025 Might Form Before May Ends

Last weekMeteorologists are closely monitoring a developing weather system in the eastern Pacific Ocean that could become the first named tropical storm of the 2025 season—potentially forming before the end of May. If it does, it would mark an unusually early start to tropical activity, as the average first storm in this region typically forms around June 10.
The system is currently situated off the southwestern coast of Mexico and may bring heavy rainfall to coastal areas such as Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco.
While it's uncertain whether the disturbance will organize into a tropical storm, forecasters note that sea surface temperatures in the region are above the threshold needed for development, increasing the likelihood of formation.
If a tropical storm does form, it will be named Alvin—the first name on the eastern Pacific storm list for 2025. This would be significantly earlier than last year's first storm, Aletta, which didn't form until July 4, marking the latest start to the eastern Pacific hurricane season in the satellite era.
