Flash Flood Threat Intensifies Across Central and Eastern U.S. Into Next Week

Flash flooding will remain a major concern for much of the central U.S. and portions of the East as we head into next week. An unstable weather pattern, fueled by moisture from the Gulf and a stalled frontal system, will drive rounds of thunderstorms capable of producing excessive rainfall.

Storm Track Zones

Areas from the central Plains through the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys to the central Appalachians are expected to see the heaviest impacts, including the risk of flash flooding. Some of these storms may even extend into the Atlantic Seaboard and parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, especially by Sunday.

What’s Fueling the Risk

A stalled front interacting with rich tropical moisture will produce repeated rounds of thunderstorms. Mini weather systems—often called ripples—will travel along this boundary, releasing significant rainfall in short periods. Rainfall totals from Saturday through Monday could reach 1 to 4 inches across a broad swath, with localized totals potentially exceeding 10 inches where storms repeatedly train over the same areas.
