The new work week is going to kick off right where it left off across the central and eastern U.S. A continual surge of storms, along with plentiful amounts of cold air, will support the development of widespread snow for the region. Here is a look at this unsettled winter weather in the week to come.

Clipper Storm Train Chugs on Through Mid-Week

Meteorologists are warning that travel disruptions are likely across a large swath of the Midwest and Northeast through at least Wednesday as the parade of clipper storms marches onward. These storms will give way to more weather systems through the end of January, keeping the wintry impacts in the picture for several more days. The incoming storms will usher in a good chance of plowable snow and hazardous ice.

Heading into the new week, a lingering clipper storm will spell trouble for the Midwest and the Northeast. A southward dip in the jet stream across the eastern U.S. is stretching the polar vortex and sending Arctic air spilling over the border from Canada. Although the waves of cold air will come and go, the overall pattern will feature plenty of frigid air.

The third clipper storm over the last week made its way into the Upper Midwest on Sunday, spreading snow to the southeast across the Great Lakes. Snowfall totals will be relatively light with this system, thanks to its fast forward speed. Widespread accumulations of an inch of snow will be the story for a zone from western Minnesota to the east and into Ohio, West Virginia, western portions of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York.
