This Climate Central temperature map for Dec. 29, 2025 to Jan. 1, 2026 shows widespread cold settling across much of the U.S., with the harshest chill focused on the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast. (Climate Central)

The early-week winter storm that is impacting parts of the central and eastern U.S. will be followed by frequent intrusions of cold air, taking the year 2025 out on a frigid note for millions of Americans. Here is what you need to know about this upcoming weather pattern.

Colder Air Sweeping Through the Eastern Half of the U.S. This Week

The last few days of the year will bring bitterly cold temperatures for the Midwest, the Great Lakes, and the Northeast. The waves of cold air will dip as far as the Southeast and into Florida by the middle of the week.

While widespread wintry precipitation is not on deck, a series of lake-effect snow events and clipper storms will bring the threat of ice and snow to the northern edge of the Midwest through the Northeast. The upcoming cold weather pattern will not rival the readings seen in early December; however, temperatures are still expected to plunge about 10 degrees lower than the historical averages for late December and early January.

This Weather Prediction Center outlook valid Monday, Dec. 29, 2025 shows a sharp cold front sweeping east, creating the risk of rapid freeze ups across the Ohio Valley and Appalachians as wet roads and sidewalks turn icy. (NOAA/NWS)
