The April astronomical calendar features the first meteor shower since January, a full pink moon, and the moon and Jupiter appearing in tandem. Here is a closer look at what to put on your viewing calendar in the month ahead.

Full Pink Moon - April 1

The month will get off to a bright start with the full pink moon rising in the sky on April 1. Although the moon will not actually appear pink, the April full moon gets its name from the timing of the moss pink wildflowers. Also known as creeping phlox or ground phlox flowers, these wildflowers begin to grow and spread this time of the year. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, these flowers are native to North America.

Other monikers for the April full moon used throughout history include the Fish Moon, the Frog Moon, and the Breaking Ice Moon.

Lyrid Meteor Shower - April 21 and 22

The Lyrid meteor shower peaks April 21–22, with up to 20 meteors per hour possible under dark skies during the pre-dawn hours. |Adobe Stock
