Gabrielle Strengthens Into Hurricane, Heads Closer to Bermuda

HURRICANE GABRIELLE | HURRICANE GABRIELLE (NHC)

Hurricane Gabrielle has rapidly intensified into a Category 3 major hurricane as of Monday, with sustained winds near 120 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Gabrielle is located about 200 miles southeast of Bermuda and moving north at around 10 mph.

The NHC reports that Gabrielle will pass east of Bermuda tonight into Tuesday as it makes a northeastward turn, steering the center of the storm away from a direct landfall.

Impacts & Forecast

  • Bermuda will experience rough surf, high swells, and dangerous rip currents, but the core of strongest winds and heaviest rainfall should remain offshore.

  • Along the U.S. East Coast, from North Carolina through New England, the primary effects will be elevated surf and rip current risks. No direct landfall in the U.S. is expected.
