Frequent Waves of Rain and Storms Will Distinguish the Weekend Weather Out East
An active weather pattern setting up across the central and eastern U.S. this weekend will raise the chance of dangerous flash flooding over the next few days. While the bulk of the severe storms are forecast to impact the busy Interstate 95 corridor, the flooding concerns will impact a broader area up and down the Atlantic Seaboard.
Several rounds of rain are on tap for the mid-Atlantic through Sunday, impacting cities such as Washington, D.C. and Richmond. A large dip in the jet stream will fuel the development of these storms and heavy downpours. Forecasters warn that some of the most potent rain bands will drop a few inches in a single hour.
It has already been a soggy week for much of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Widespread rain totals of 1 to 3 inches were recorded on Thursday, with some parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York picking up 4 inches of rain.
While most of the Northeast will enjoy a brief break from the rain on Friday, lingering rain showers will continue to put a damper on activities in southeastern New England. The heaviest concentration of rain to end the work week will focus on North Carolina and the southern edge of Virginia.
