It was a messy start to the week for much of the Great Lakes, the interior Northeast, and the Appalachians, as an early-season snowstorm pummeled the region. Here is the latest report on snowfall totals, as well as what to expect for lingering snow on Tuesday.

The first major snow event of the season impacted the Upper Midwest and the Great Lakes beginning on Sunday and persisting through Monday. Some portions of the region picked up several inches of lake-effect snow, snarling commutes in both the morning and evening hours. While the snow is starting to dissipate across the Great Lakes, the flakes will continue to fly on Tuesday across some parts of the Appalachians, upstate New York, and the northern edge of New England.

A short but intense outbreak of cold temperatures helped to fuel the snow. This blast of Arctic air is now pushing into the Southeast and Florida, threatening to bring record-breaking low temperatures.

The most potent snowfall bands set up over the usual western Great Lakes snowbelts, stretching from Michigan into Indiana. To the south, heavy snow is also falling across portions of the Smoky Mountains. A number of winter storms and lake-effect snow warnings and advisories were issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) ahead of the weather maker.
