A powerful cross-country fall storm has swept into the Great Lakes region, delivering fierce winds, torrential rain, and travel disruptions across parts of the Midwest and interior Northeast. After battering the Plains and Mississippi Valley over the weekend, the system is now moving east, marking one of the season’s most intense weather events so far.

Great Lakes Hit Hard by Powerful Storm System

Millions of Americans have already felt the storm’s impact after it tracked from the Pacific into the Plains and across the Midwest over the weekend. After delivering the wettest October day in years to Southern California, the weather maker chugged over the Rockies and into the Plains. Saturday's threats trained over the Ozarks and the Mississippi Valley, ushering in severe storms more typical of a spring weather event.

The line of storms moved into the interior Northeast on Sunday, impacting football games and fall foliage viewing. A variety of volatile atmospheric ingredients are fueling the severe weather as warm and humid air from the Gulf surges to the north to pair with the energy in the jet stream.
