NOAA GOES-West AirMass composite satellite imagery captured at 13:10Z on June 10, 2026, showing the dramatic contrast between the hot, dry air mass dominating the western and central United States in deep brown and red tones, the moist tropical air streaming northward from the Gulf in green and yellow, and the active frontal boundary and storm system pushing into the eastern U.S. and Northeast in vivid blue and purple, illustrating the atmospheric setup driving both dangerous heat and severe thunderstorm development across the country.

The heatwave that is spreading across the central and eastern U.S. this week will bring along high humidity levels capable of triggering potent thunderstorms in the days ahead. Read on for the details of the stormy and steamy forecast.

Heat Wave Bringing Real Feel Temperatures in the Triple Digits

NOAA GOES-West Band 10 water vapor satellite imagery captured at 13:20Z on June 10, 2026, showing the expansive heat dome dominating the western and central United States in deep orange tones, with a plume of Gulf moisture in yellow streaming northward into the central and eastern U.S., fueling the combination of oppressive heat and thunderstorm development forecast through the end of the week.

The pairing of rising temperatures and oppressive humidity will boost thunderstorm action by the end of the week. Temperatures are already on the upswing across the central Plains, the Upper Midwest, and the Ohio Valley. Widespread highs in the upper 80s and the mid 90s will be the story for the mid-Atlantic, the Appalachians, the Northeast, and up into New England by Thursday and Friday.

When combined with the humidity and the intense sunshine, real feel readings will approach the triple digits for several hours at times. Forecasters are warning that new daily record highs could be set in some areas. For instance, Scranton, Pennsylvania, is forecast to hit 99 degrees on Friday. The record high for this date in history in Scranton is 91 degrees, dating back to 1949.
