7 hours agoWhat was supposed to be the perfect honeymoon getaway turned into an unthinkable tragedy for a young couple visiting Florida's coast last week.
Jake Rosencranz, 29, from Colorado, died after being struck by lightning while standing in shallow water at New Smyrna Beach on June 20. The newlywed was enjoying time with his wife in ankle-deep water when lightning struck around 12:30 in the afternoon.
Beach safety crews rushed to help immediately, starting CPR and trying everything they could to save him. But despite their best efforts and a trip to the hospital, Rosencranz couldn't be revived. He became Florida's first lightning death this year.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood shared the heartbreaking details on Facebook, explaining how the couple had come to celebrate their marriage. "They were visiting our beaches to celebrate their marriage. In one terrifying second everything changed," he wrote.
The sheriff thanked everyone who jumped in to help, trying to give the man a fighting chance. But sometimes, even with the fastest response, nature wins.
