It’s astonishing to consider that the ocean covers about 71% of the earth’s surface and, yet, it remains relatively unexplored and often misunderstood. It also contains about 97% of the planet’s water. 

The ocean has the power to soothe when people spend a day at the beach and the power to destroy when a tsunami takes out an entire city or town. To fully comprehend how deep is the ocean, let’s take a closer look at some of its measurements.

Across the globe, the average depth of ocean water is 12,080 feet. This, however, is a difficult number to rely upon because the ocean floor is not uniform throughout the entire world.
