Hurricane season can ramp up quickly across Florida, often with little warning. Even storms far offshore can generate dangerous surf, flooding rain, tornadoes, and widespread power outages. The best time to prepare is before a storm is on the map.

Florida’s hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity typically occurring from August into October. Here’s how to prepare your home and family before the next tropical system threatens the state.

Build a Hurricane Plan Before Stores and Roads Get Crowded

First things first, sit down with everyone in your house and hash out the basics. Ask important questions like: how will you contact each other when cell towers fail? Where will you meet? Who's grabbing the cat?

Know your evacuation zone. Check it now at your county's emergency management site. Talk to your neighbors—they might have a generator you can share, or you might have the only working grill post-storm.
