The Caribbean is recovering from two major hurricane landfalls this week, resulting in dozens of fatalities and mass destruction.

Haiti Leads List of Fatalities Blamed on Melissa

Over two dozen people have been confirmed dead in the Caribbean after Hurricane Melissa made landfall in both Jamaica and Cuba this week. The historic storm first came ashore in New Hope, Jamaica, as a monster Category 5 storm early Tuesday afternoon. After battering the island all day, the storm then made a second landfall near Chivirico, Cuba, at 3:10 a.m. EDT on Wednesday as a Category 3 event.

While Jamaica and Cuba sustained the two direct strikes, the greatest number of fatalities is being reported in Haiti. The mayor of the community of Petit-Grove in the southern portion of the island confirmed that at least 25 people lost their lives after a river overflowed its banks and sent floodwaters into the town.
