The numbers are startling. Over 1,000 deaths related to hypothermia are estimated to occur every year in the U.S. Emergency rooms across the nation report treating thousands more cases annually. What is hypothermia, what are its symptoms and causes, and how is it treated? Read on for everything that you need to know about this winter season danger.

Understanding Hypothermia

Hypothermia sets in when the body loses internal heat faster than it can produce this warmth. This deficit causes the core body temperature to drop below what the body needs. Mild hypothermia happens when the body temperature slips to 90 to 95 degrees, while moderate cases are defined as temperatures hovering between 82 and 90 degrees. Severe cases of hypothermia happen when the body temperatures fall to 77 to 82 degrees. Any temperature below 77 degrees is considered to be an extreme case of hypothermia.

These significant drops in body temperature result in disruptions to the function of the heart, brain, and nervous systems. Hypothermia can be fatal if not treated.
