Imelda Threatens Bermuda as Tropics Remain Active

9 hours agoBermuda is the loser of the tropical weather lottery this week in the Atlantic, feeling the impacts of two different hurricanes. Here is a look at what this group of islands has seen over the last few days, as well as what else is expected to brew in the Atlantic basin heading into October.
Two Tropical Weather Events Impact Bermuda in as Many Days
After dealing with a glancing blow from Hurricane Humberto, Bermuda had less than one day to recover before taking a hit from Hurricane Imelda. What was once Category 5 Humberto dumped 1 to 2 inches of rain across Bermuda on Monday and Tuesday. Waves hit heights of 40 feet as Humberto churned up the seas surrounding the islands. As of the Wednesday update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Humberto was packing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph as it raced to the east-northeast through the North Atlantic at a speed of 23 mph.
Residents of Bermuda only got a brief respite from the messy conditions before Hurricane Imelda approached the islands late Tuesday and into Wednesday. While Humberto passed several hundred miles away from Bermuda, Imelda is taking direct aim at the islands. The NHC said on Wednesday afternoon that Category 2 Imelda was featuring winds of about 100 mph as it moved at a fast clip of 22 mph to the east-northeast.
The eyewall of Imelda could pass right over Bermuda late Wednesday. The fast speed at which Imelda is moving will work to limit rainfall amounts. The latest forecast is calling for rain of about 2 to 3 inches. However, the risk of flash flooding will be heightened due to the timing of this new round of moisture right on the heels of Humberto's rain.
