Forecasters are becoming more confident about the expectation of a major snow and ice storm across the southern and eastern U.S. this weekend. Over 150 million Americans are likely to be in the path of this monster storm. Here is an updated look at what the models are saying as the storm is just one day away for some areas.

Latest Details on Major Winter Weather Event

A major winter weather event is bearing down on more than a dozen states stretching from Texas to the Carolinas, and to the north into Massachusetts. The impacts are slated to fire up on Friday, lasting through the weekend in some areas. The degree of the snow and ice will be enough to disrupt life for days.

Even areas that dodge the heavy snow may see enough ice to cause widespread power outages. The impact zone across the South is not typically equipped to deal with wintry precipitation of this magnitude, meaning that schools and businesses may be forced to close for days.

Compounding the issue will be the arrival of Arctic air filtering down from the north. The anticipated power outages will likely overwhelm utility crews. Unfortunately, the timing of the ice with the bitter cold means that many residents could be without heat during the worst of the conditions. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the teens and single digits in many communities in the southern tier of the country, also raising the risk of burst pipes.
