As Hurricane Melissa tore through Jamaica, a different kind of storm erupted online. While residents sheltered from the historic Category 5 system, some influencers kept posting carefree vacation videos, triggering backlash across TikTok and Instagram for what many are calling "tragedy tourism."

One creator with more than 150,000 followers posted a travel clip captioned, "Hurricane Melissa out here messing with my vacation." Another filmed herself holding frozen cocktails with the text, "Pretending there's not a Category 5 hurricane hitting Jamaica."

Both videos were later deleted after users flooded the comments with outrage.

Critics Say Influencers Crossed the Line With 'Hurricane Melissa' Videos

The criticism proliferated as comment sections filled with anger. Viewers accused influencers of turning human suffering into entertainment, while hashtags like #TragedyTourism and #MelissaContent began trending.
