ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Scientists are keeping a close eye on Mount Spurr, a towering volcano west of Anchorage, as new signs of activity raise concerns about a possible eruption. While experts say there’s no immediate danger, recent earthquakes and changes inside the volcano suggest it could be stirring.

Mount Spurr is no stranger to eruptions. In 1992, the volcano sent a huge cloud of ash into the sky, covering parts of Alaska with thick, dark dust. The eruption disrupted air travel and forced residents to stay indoors. Before that, its last major eruption was in 1953. Scientists say the volcano tends to wake up every few decades, making its activity now something to watch closely.
