The long-range forecast is not favorable for those in the South and the East. A new winter storm is on the horizon for these regions, expected to hit just in time for the weekend. Here is a look at what the latest forecast models are indicating.

New Winter Weather Maker Waiting in the Wings

Another major winter weather maker is threatening to strike the same parts of the country that have been left paralyzed by last weekend's event. Forecasters are now predicting that the last week of January could deliver another round of wintry impacts, fresh on the heels of last weekend's storm.

Over a foot of snow blanketed the Northeast and New England in the last few days. To the south, it was freezing rain and the resulting ice buildup that caused the bulk of the disruptions. At least 30 deaths have been confirmed as a result of the storm. Unfortunately, more of the same appears to be on the way.

NOAA snowfall analysis shows estimated U.S. accumulation from the 72-hour period ending 12 UTC on Jan 28, 2026, highlighting the heaviest recent totals across parts of the Great Lakes, the Mid-Atlantic, and New England after last weekend’s storm.

The late-week storm is expected to also usher in another wave of Arctic air, resulting in temperatures that are even colder than what the eastern half of the country is currently experiencing. Temperatures are not expected to surpass the freezing mark all week across much of the Midwest, the Ohio Valley, and the Northeast. While daytime highs will inch up above freezing in the southern Plains, the Mississippi Valley, and the Southeast, overnight lows will continue to slide below zero degrees each night after the sun goes down.
